Famous Drinking Games

We have all been on stag nights and college campuses, when consuming beer on lads or girl’s night has to be accompanied with a hilarious drinking game. There are many such games around the world, some word orientated and some just plain physical, in this blog we look at some of the more common ones.

The Yard of Ale

The Yard of Ale

In many traditional pubs and taverns around the world you can see a strange looking glass object behind the bar, often a long tube with a bulb at the base, and sometimes a boot with a large heel. These are called Yards of Ale, and it is one of the oldest pub drinking challenges in existence. The Yard of Ale was thought up in the 17th Century and was popular in English taverns at the time, it is traditionally a tall glass with a fluted neck and a bottom shaped in the form of a bulb, it holds about 2 pints of liquid. The contestant is meant to drink the beer in one attempt, but the bulb at the bottom makes a large splash back if not drank properly, this drenches the contender with beer.

Flip Cup

A very popular and modern game that is mostly played with plastic or paper cups. It really is as it sounds, the contestants have to flip an empty cup, over and onto its rim before an opponent. Often this is a team based game where contestants face each other and the race is down the line, the losers have to fill their cups up with beer and finish the drink in one go.

The Broom Race

The Broom Race

A great and fun game for large parties, and best played outdoors. Teams stand in lines one player after another. A pint of beer is drunk as fast as possible by the first in line of each team, once finished the contestants run ten yards to a broom. Placing their forehead of the broom handle they must spin around the broom ten times and return back to the start and tag the next in line. The game is quite hilarious, as when the players spin around the broom they get dizzy and quite disorientated, and getting back to the start is really a hoot. The first team to get all their players back to the start win, while the losing teams have a drink fine.

Beer Pong

Opposing players or teams face each other over a table-tennis table, on each side a series of cups full with alcohol is in front of them, shaped in a triangle with the apex the furthest point away. They then take turns throwing ping pong balls at each other’s cups.

If your ball lands in an opponent’s cup, they have to drink whatever is in the cup. Once the cup is drank and empty and then gets knocked over the cup is then removed from the table, but if the ball lands in the empty cup then it is filled again and has to be drunk once more. Whoever removes all their opponent’s cups from the table wins the Beer Pong game. These games are bound to make a party go with a swing, the good thing about them is that they are not complicated or expensive to set up.
